My thoughts on the closure of HMV

Just like everyone, I am still shocked at the closure of top entertainment store HMV. It was one of the best British high street shops around for years and I always loved going in there to browse the latest releases as I am one of the biggest music fans you’ll every meet!

We all know exactly why this long standing figure of the British high street closed down, it’s because of the growing number of people using the internet and ITunes to download their music to their IPods and MP3 players, I may be only 14 but I really don’t see what is wrong with a good old CD! I have a whole rack of CD’s at home and always enjoy listening to them whenever I get the chance, Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that downloading and streaming music is wrong and shouldn’t be done because I also do that quite often when I don’t have enough money to go out and buy the CD but as a musician I appreciate how hard it is for up and coming artists to make decent money from their CD’s when everyone is buying them online!

I honestly thought that HMV was going to be around forever! how wrong was I? at one time,  HMV was making millions of pounds every week and eventually everything went wrong all thanks to the ability to purchase music online! however, I do have one little bone to pick with HMV, I was recently talking to a friend who said that HMV stores were turning away people with vouchers even though the people had paid money for them and HMV need to get rid of everything anyway, I think that this is a big mistake! they could have made quite a bit of money off of those vouchers and who knows, maybe they could’ve saved their brand after all but because they are obviously too busy doing nothing they didn’t use their business brains and now over 4,000 jobs have been lost which will now contribute to the countries unemployment rate and cause the country to go into deeper recession!

I will forever miss HMV and the number of CD’s that I was able to buy from there but now at least another shop can hopefully take over and pick up where HMV left off although I strongly doubt that would happen and let’s face it, we have all contributed in one way or another to HMV’s death by streaming or using Itunes and now our guilt is truly starting to show it’s ugly face

  1. I don't know if you'll see any new bricks and mortar CD stores Gary (you thought I was going to call you James!) coming again to your neighbourhood. Not unless they're pure nostalgia. No profit in it anymore, sadly.
