It seems that this long awaited debate has finally come upon us and I think that’s it’s about time to. To be honest I’m surprised that it has taken this long for the topic of legalising gay marriage to finally reach the house of commons. In some respects I agree that this debate should be left alone until the next election simply because this give all of the political parties to add legalising gay marriage to their manifesto’s. Many people have been saying that David Cameron should make a decision now because if he agrees to legalise gay marriage during the next election could cause people to vote for another party and cost him his seat as Prime Minister. I disagree with this because I think that by legalising gay marriage, Cameron would be emphasizing that all people should be allowed the same rights and one of those rights is the right to marriage.
I think that he would possibly secure his second term as Prime Minister by allowing gay marriage because he would get a lot of support from the gay community for showing them equality. On the other however, if he was to keep gay marriage illegal then he would get support from many religious leaders so either way he would win I suppose but yet again he would get criticised and possibly be labelled a homophobic which I’m assuming isn’t true.
I feel that gay marriage should be allowed because it is totally unfair to say that two people that love each other shouldn’t be allowed to make the same commitment as a heterosexual couple can! I am very interested to hear David Cameron’s decision on this and I wonder what the reaction of the public will be like, will he manage to secure another stay at Downing street or will it all come crumbling down around him? We will have to wait and see!
I personally would like David Cameron to re-elected because I really couldn’t stand yet another government coming in and wrecking everything all over again and making another set of promises that we all know they won’t keep in the long run but lets be honest that’s what every government does!
