I have just read two reports of Taliban attacks in Afghanistan. The first one was a suicide bombing in the southern province in Kandahar outside an intelligence agency building where at least 5 Afghan security personnel. Some other reports said that 4 Afghan people were killed as well as two members of the International Coalition. In neighboring Zabul Province, a roadside bomb killed two policemen and wounded three others.
The other attack actually involved some Taliban soldiers getting into Camp Bastion and attacking the base and killing two US Marines. A set of wire cutters and a moonless night was all these fifteen insurgents needed to execute their assault on the most feared base among Taliban in Afghanistan. The Marines admitted in an interview that they were "taken by surprise" when the attack took place.
Surely these two attacks must prove to Cameron and Obama that Afghanistan is not ready at all for troops to withdraw in two years! it's very lucky that the Marines were alert and realized that the people coming down the road in the bus towards Bastion was not full of Marines but was in fact full of Taliban and were able to easily fight back.
However, it turns out that the fence surrounding Camp Bastion was not alarmed which enabled Taliban to cut the fence and gain entry to the apparently secure base. Major General Gurganus who leads American and Nato forces has said "There were no suicide bombers, no tunnels all that was used was a standard wire cutter found in your average toolbox" when asked how Taliban gained entry to Bastion.
